mtv europe music awards — best and worst dressed

as i don't listen to horrible mainstream pop music, the only interesting part of the europe music awards last night were the outfits of the stars. here comes my personal best and worst dressed list.

karl strikes again.

everything karl lagerfeld touches becomes a huge success, at least for his money bag. the popular accessory brand 'fossil' wants to eat free cheese and initiated a cooperation.

who gives a fuck about fashion?

no matter what i'm going to write, i just want you to know that i love kenzo and everybody earns a second chance.

this sweater by kenzo is a must-have according to a lot of fashion journalists and bloggers. there is a real hype around all the sweaters by kenzo and in a few weeks, everyone who doesn't already own one is going to have one of those or will desperately search a copy (and there will be a lot of copies) at the nearest departement store.
every single blog i read features this piece of (sorry) shit. you can't ignore it, even if you really try to. so because i can't pretend this sweater doesn't exist, i'm going to tell you why i really hate it.

first of all, i seem to have a different opinion concerning fashion as most bloggers do. i'm of the opinion that the main purpose of fashion is to make it's wearer look good. clothes are made for the people who buy them.

of course there are trends, and i like trends. they somehow reflect the zeitgeist.

if there are trends which can make people look better and are beautiful or interesting, then i follow this trend and i introduce it to you on this blog. but trends shouldn't be more important than your look.

the kenzo-sweater isn't beautiful. it's a trend which makes you look bad, pretty similar to ed hardy. sweaters in general are pretty difficult, cause they make you look lazy and fat, but if someone vomits on them and labels them with a brand in such an embarrassing way, a difficult piece becomes a disaster.

still, the sweater is a trend which is becoming huge. so please think twice before buying one at zara which will be full of them next month. think about whether going with the trend is worth looking like a fat, distressed teenager from the eighties. instead, don't give a fuck on fashion and buy something classy that makes you shine. if you're able to think like that, you've got more brain than most of the fashion community does.

i hate fashion.

sometimes i hate fashion. well, i don't actually hate it, but it really gives me a hard time.

for years, maybe since marie antoinette died as one of the victims of the french revolution, it was quite clear that one might never ever combine dark shades of blue and black. in fact, it was sin.

this rule was one of the first things my grandmother, who was working at a gentlemen's outfitter, taught me. and now all the fashion magazines, designers and stylists tell me that black and blue is one of the hottest trends of the season? tough to imagine.

still, i had to take a closer look at it. sorry grandma, but i have to confess: i like this trend. if you do it right, your outfit may look quite vibrant and deep, like a clear night sky. in addition, i have always been of the opinion that blue is the perfect color for every type because it looks so classy and elegant.

i believed so much in the old 'no black and blue rule' that my introducing the trend to you may be a few weeks too late, but i just had to mention it on the blog because black and blue should definetely be considered as your favourite combination of colours during the christmas season.

some quick tips:

-one colour should predominate
-it's better to wear this combination in the evening than during the day
-take a dark shade of blue

i've already picked some examples for you:

burberry

milly

viktor & rolf

zara

cushnie et ochs
burberry

i really hope you like the trend. if that's the case, you should have a look in your wardrobe because i'm pretty sure that you don't even have to go shopping to wear this trend.

short thoughts about instagram

surely you know instagram. if not, than you must have been asleep for a very long time or you simply are ignorant.
instagram is a great way to get inspired. especially when it comes to fashion you just have to follow the right users to get a great overview of the latest trends and styles.
in addition, it also is a great way to boost your creativity. seeing all the beautiful, crazy and sometimes even breathtaking shots gives you some great ideas for your outfit, your nutrition or your own pictures.

if you don't have an instagram-account: get one! don't miss that awesome pool of inspiration, it's quick, easy and simple, you can even check your instagram on the toilet.
maybe you'll want to follow me. in that case, just look for 'eatthecostume'. i'll be waiting.

shopping guide: zara

attention! eatthecostume is a german blog, but from now in it will be written in english. just to give all the poor, badly dressed people out there some help. for all of you who prefer to read german texts: don't worry, we're currently working on a solution to create a bilingual blog. and now stop being egoistic and complaining and go on reading, i've prepared something quite lovely for you:

a lot of friends told me about how much they'd like to wear more fashionable clothes, but they simply couldn't afford a nice gucci-bag or anything comparable. well, i've got a pretty simple solution for you: zara, mango, topman, topshop, urban outfitters and all these chain stores out there. some fashionistas surely would contradict, but these stores give you a pretty easy, quick and inexpensive opportunity to pick up the latest trends and finally start looking fashionable, especially if you are not living in berlin and there aren't all these awesome flea markets around you.

i really adore zara, so i decided to pick some of my favorite pieces of the season and present them to you. give at least one of them a new home!

when it's getting cold outside, the coat is the most important thing about your outfit. really. the combination of different materials in one piece is one of the greatest and most beautiful trends this season. furthermore, dear men out there, you have to have a trench-coat. it's a basic. so if you don't own one: buy this wonderful thing!

again it's about material: velvet is all the rage. and leather... well, i love leather, so this season loves me, because some designers even created all-over-leather-looks. don't be afraid to wear this material. you'll look magnificent, as long as you are as skinny as i am. if you are not the thin-type: no problem, stay with accessories.

the shirt is just awesome. i love the colours, the print, the denim-touch... it simply is a must-have. dear women: you shouldn't wear this jacquard-all-over-look. but try the jacket. a friend of mine wears it and it looks great! not just because jacquard is so trendy, it's just beautiful.

the poncho on the left is actually a piece from the men's collection and i'm so happy about it. i love huge scarves and ponchos can be a great alternative to coats and jackets, especially on mild days. in addition, the pattern is quite handsome
i mainly chose the top on the right because of it's colour. this burgundy is the hottest colour of the season. furthermore, i just like the transparency and the details. what i want to tell you is: buy something in burgundy!

again, a clever and subtile mix of materials. guys, you should still wear boots, as long as fashion allows you to. maybe these with their combination of felt and leather.
and girls: these shoes are hot. i know, i'm a guy, so i know nothing about the pain they'll cause, but they are simply wonderful! the mix of patent leather and gold works great.

finally, the bags. guys, you should wear the right one of course. the croc leather look is exactly what you need this autumn. it looks sophisticated, masculine and strong.
the bag on the right is one of the party-boxes you can see on gossip girl regularly. they are all the rage, so don't think about buying one. do it! this one has a great look and it's burgundy (imagine burgundy written in capital letters.)

let me know if this was helpful. i'm always happy about your feedback concerning the articles or the german/ english decision.

enjoy the cold season.

autodidakt.
